With the beginning of this month, Newark Liberty International Airport won't be regarded as a New York City destination, which could result in customers paying a fee if they wish to transfer to the hubs in the Big Apple.
IATA announced that NYC city code will be removed Newark Liberty with effect from October 03, 2022. Newark was once included in the "NYC" cluster of airports together with LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International Airport. The "EWR" code will now be the only way to refer to the airport in New Jersey.
Flight Destination Charges Applicable for Altering the Destination between NYC and EWR
Flyers who want to change their destination between the New York airports and Newark may have to pay a fee once the change is in effect. The destination change fee applicable would depend on the airlines.
Will there be changes in EWR flight fares?
Flights into EWR may be less expensive than those into LGA or JFK. At the same time, it can mean that it will cost more. Passengers need to check the fare rules with the airlines.
However, the airlines will need to be careful and deliberate about this because if they impose an airport change fee on top of all the other expenses they already include in flight ticket, they could lose passengers.
