On October 10, 2022, Etihad Airways successfully launched its first flight from Abu Dhabi to Guangzhou. Etihad Airways inaugural flight, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, left Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) at 23:39 hrs local time and touched the ground at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) at 10:46 local time. With this, it has become the first carrier to provide non-stop flights between Guangzhou and Abu Dhabi.
On this occasion, Etihad CEO Tony Douglas stated:
"We are very grateful for the support from both governments, business partners, and our Etihad team. (...) Our new service to Guangzhou will not only further address the huge demand for passenger travel between the UAE and China, building on the formidable people and business ties between the two markets, but also support the increasing consolidation and strengthening of Etihad's presence in China and global aviation industry."
Future plans call for Etihad to operate twice-a-week flights between Abu Dhabi and Guangzhou.
The launch of the Abui Dhabi-Guangzhou route affirms the commitment of the UAE national carrier to serve the Chinese market. This is the first time in the last decade that Etihad has opened a new Chinese route. And with direct AUH-CAN flights, Etihad has become the first foreign carrier to operate long-haul flights to all three major gateways to China- Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. I
Douglas mentioned:
"Guangzhou is actually the latest destination to be opened in China by Etihad since the launch of the Abu Dhabi–Shanghai route back in 2012. It will continue to help build a solid air bridge for commerce and cultural exchanges between China and the UAE."
Flights on AUH-CAN by Etihad Airways are indeed a sign of its commitment to the Chinese market.
Travelers to China from the U.S.A can book flights to Guangzhou with a stopover at Abu Dhabi. Though the booking needs to be created on a sector basis and each sector needs to be booked in the same RBD.
For example:
If you’re planning to travel from New York ( JFK) to Guangzhou (CAN), you need to make your airline reservations in JFK-AUH and AUH -CAN format and not JFK-CSN and also in the same Reservation Booking Designator (RBD).
